In 1957, my Nonna, Francesca Maggioncalda fled from war-torn Italy with nothing but the clothes on her back and a few family recipes engraved in her mind. Four decades later, when I was born and I’ve made a promise to my Nonna to learn my family’s recipes and pass them down to my future family.
This is a family recipe developed by my Nonna, Francesca Maggioncalda.
The way she created it was from a dough that they used to make every Easter. This dough would be shaped into various figurines for different members of the family. The girls would get a pupazza (doll), the boys would get a cavalluccio (horse), and their father would get il cuore (a heart)…
